White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki (5/13/21): “Well, we have issued a statement of administrative pol- — administration policy, as you know, strongly backing the bill.  And our view is that admitting D.C. as a state is well within Congress’s power, and that the arguments to the contrary are faulty. But we also think there are ways to allay the concerns that have been raised, and that’s why we’re working with Congress to make the bill as strong as possible, as would be the case in any — nearly any negotiation or about any piece of legislation… I — I’m not going to get into more details of it, other than we certainly would support D.C. statehood and strongly back the bill.”

We put out a Statement of Administration Policy in strong support of H.R. 51 just this morning. His view is that we are – the denial of voting representation in Congress and local self-government to the 712,000 residents of our nation’s capital violates two of our nation’s founding principles: no taxation without representation and consent of the governed and he will continue to advocate for this passing. I will also note an interesting detail I didn’t know until this morning is that there are a number of members of course of the armed forces, retired military who of course live in the District of Columbia and are denied – as a result of having the lack of statehood – the rights that many others around the country have. So there are number of issues why this is absolutely the right step and the President will continue to advocate for it.”

For far too long, the more than 700,000 people of Washington, D.C. have been deprived of full representation in the U.S. Congress. H.R. 51 rights this wrong by making Washington, D.C. a state and providing its residents with long overdue full representation in Congress, while maintaining a Federal District that will continue to serve as our Nation’s seat of government. Washington, D.C. has a robust economy, a rich culture, and a diverse population of Americans from all walks of life who are entitled to full and equal participation in our democracy. The Administration looks forward to working with the Congress as H.R. 51 proceeds through the legislative process to ensure that it comports with Congress’ constitutional responsibilities and its constitutional authority to admit new states to the Union by legislation. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki (4/14/21): “Well, he supports it.  And in his conversations, of which there are many, as is evidenced by the last few days, a range of topics and issues come up, and he certainly expresses his support.  And ultimately, it’s up to Congress to pass legislation and send it to his desk… I would say he supports it, so he’d be happy to sign it.  But in terms of the rank priorities, I’m not going to get into a situation of doing that.  But it’s something he supports.  He’s conveyed that to Congress.  And he certainly supports efforts to move it forward.”
